Overcoming Adversity: The Furness Family’s Story
The Furness family has faced one of the toughest challenges imaginable – the devastating brain injury suffered by Steve Furness, Shannon’s father. On February 3, 2024, Shannon’s brother found their father unconscious, lifeless, and covered in his own vomit on the kitchen floor. Immediate action was taken, and CPR was started, saving Steve’s life. However, the family was given a daunting five-minute decision: whether to perform life-saving surgery or let him pass away, not knowing who his family was. This harrowing experience led to a difficult year for the family, but they chose to give their dad a chance, opting for surgery. Shannon, who runs a dog grooming business, credits this decision with saving her father’s life. “It all went well, but that day we were still told that dad probably wasn’t going to make it through the night, so to say our goodbyes,” she reflects. Just over a year later, and after five brain surgeries, Steve is still with them, making remarkable progress in his recovery. Steve is currently undergoing neuro-rehabilitation at Laverstock Care Centre, where he is receiving treatment from top physiotherapists and speech therapists. Shannon’s family’s remarkable story is a testament to the power of love, determination, and the human spirit. Despite the challenges they face, the Furness family remains strong, and their bond is unbreakable.
Running for a Cause: Shannon’s Journey to the London Marathon
Shannon has decided to run the London Marathon, a feat that would intimidate many, but for her, it’s a way to make her father proud and step out of her comfort zone. As she explains, “Dad has always loved watching athletics on TV, and he’d always say ‘You’d be a great runner, my darling.’ So, now it’s my time to do what he’d love me to do.” This newfound determination has been a game-changer for Shannon, who has never been a runner before. With the support of her family and charity, she’s embarked on an incredible journey. Shannon has secured a charity place in the London Marathon, which she will be running for Brain Research, a charity dedicated to researching neurological conditions. This charity is close to Shannon’s heart, and she’s passionate about raising awareness and funds for their cause. “Brain Research is in my opinion one of the most important charities I’ve ever known,” she says. “I will forever appreciate all the research that goes into neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury.” Shannon’s decision to run for Brain Research is a testament to her love and gratitude for her father’s life. Shannon will be joining a group of runners from across the country who are also running for Brain Research. This shared experience will not only bring them closer to their individual goals but also provide a sense of community and solidarity. As Shannon puts it, “Thank you Brain Research. Thank you Brain surgeons, and most of all, Thank you Dad for fighting to still be here with us.” You can support Shannon’s efforts by donating at 2025tcslondonmarathon.enthuse.com/pf/shannon-furness.
