When it comes to my real job, I’ve always been forward thinking, but never in a million years did I think I would ever find myself working remotely. Every job I have worked at were big fans of the traditional work environment. My experiences working remotely were few and far between, but now I am working remotely full time.
My wife redesigned my home office some time ago as a gift to me. She did a fantastic job with picking out colors and the theme of the room. After a couple of weeks of working from home, I have found a few things that just don’t work for me. I searched the web and found inspiration through Apartment Therapy. Let us go through together, try to fix these issues and create a similar look.
Desk:
I currently have your typical writing desk and am using that for my laptop. It works well for just a laptop, but I need more space to accommodate a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. I had an L-shaped desk before and loved it. However, it was clear glass on aluminum. I would like something that looks a little more solid.
Unfortunately for me, solid wood, low profile desks are not within my price range. I found this smoked glass desk from Target, though. I figured it could serve as an alternative to what I am looking for.
Office Chair:
I currently have a high back office chair, which does the job alright, but my wife has been eyeing it for her office and I think I am ready for a new one.
The inspiration room has a white office chair. I am not comfortable with choosing a white chair. I feel it would scuff up easily and the scars left behind would drive me crazy. I found a similar chair in black on Overstock or O.co, whatever the eff they call it these days.
The chair is about a tenth of the cost of the one suggested by Apartment Therapy, yet is almost a carbon copy of the one featured in the room.
Computer Monitor:
Since I made the decision a couple of years ago to move from a desktop to a laptop, I have not had the need for an external monitor. Well, times have changed and, since I will be doing a lot of multitasking in this new job, now is the time to start looking at dual monitor setups again. I found a model that I might like. It was an arduous decision as to whether to go with LED or LCD. LCD is cheaper, but LED is so low power.
Fortunately, I found this particular model at a decent price on Amazon: Acer 21.5″ LED Monitor. Seems like LCD models at that size are about the same price.
Keyboard and Mouse:
Like the monitor, I have not had the need for a keyboard and mouse in quite some time. When it came to this, my ultimate decision was whether or not to go wireless. I was worried about the battery life, but then realized that I have a stockpile of rechargeable batteries in a drawer somewhere in the house. With that out of the way, I wanted something affordable and something that looks decent.
Through a search on Amazon, I found this Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo. Not a bad deal for just under $30.
So… those are the nuts and bolts of the revamp of the workspace. I am hoping to get the office completely together by next month and have some pictures up at that time.
What do you think? Am I on the right track to recreate the inspiration room?
